Leicester City defender Lewis Brunt has returned from his successful loan spell at Mansfield Town, as confirmed by the Stags’ official club website.

Leicester City gave the 23-year-old the green light to link up with the Nottinghamshire outfit on a temporary basis last summer and he went on to help the Stags gain automatic promotion from League Two along with Stockport County and Wrexham.

Brunt, who is from Birmingham, enjoyed regular game time during his time at Field Mill and went on to make 40 appearances in all competitions, 34 of which came in the league for Nigel Clough’s side, and he chipped in with two goals from the back.

Mansfield Town have become one of the latest teams in the Football League to publish their retained list and have announced that Brunt has gone back to the King Power Stadium as they gear up for life in League One.

Who is this?

Leicester City man back from Mansfield Town

Leicester City have a big decision to make regarding what to do next with Brunt ahead of the next campaign.

The Foxes are back in the Premier League after winning the Championship title and have been joined in the top flight by Ipswich Town.

Brunt’s chances of getting into Enzo Maresca’s starting XI next term are slim due to the abundance of options that they have in his position at their disposal which means another exit isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.

He started his career at Aston Villa and rose up through the academy ranks of the Midlands outfit.

The centre-back never made a senior appearance during his Villa Park days though and was loaned out to Gloucester City in non-league to get some experience under his belt before heading out the exit door on a permanent basis in 2021.

Leicester City snapped him up on a free transfer and he has since played twice for the Foxes.

Could Leicester City defender return to Mansfield Town?

It remains to be seen whether Mansfield Town would be interested in bringing him back for a second spell as they prepare for the third tier. He slotted in nicely into their team and was one of the first names on the team sheet.

His contract expires in 2025 meaning Leicester City are under no pressure to let him leave anytime soon unless they feel any incoming offers are too good to reject.

The Stags have confirmed on their retained list that Anthony Hartigan, Callum Johnson, John-Joe O’Toole and Louie Turner have been released, whilst talks are ongoing with Lucas Akins, Ollie Clarke, James Gale, George Maris, Stephen McLaughlin, Rhys Oates, Stephen Quinn, Taylor Anderson, George Cooper and Owen Mason.

They have triggered options for George Williams, McKeal Abdullah, Charlie Carter, Finn Flanagan, Jakub Kruszynski and Darien Wauchope.
