Chesterfield are being linked with a swoop for departing Stockport County striker Paddy Madden, as per journalist Mike Minay on X.

Chesterfield are back in the Football League following their promotion from the National League under the guidance of former Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town boss Paul Cook and have a busy summer ahead of them as they look to bolster their ranks.

Madden, 34, has been a great servant to Stockport County over the past few years and has helped them rise from non-league to League One. However, he is leaving Edgeley Park permanently at the end of June when his deal expires and he is due to become a free agent.

As per reporter Minday on social media (see below), the Spirerites could try and snap him up for nothing to boost their options at the top end of the pitch. They currently also have Will Grigg on their books.

Who is this?

Landing Madden would be a statement of intent by Chesterfield if they were able to get a deal over the line.

He is a proven goal scorer in League Two and would provide competition and depth to Cook’s attacking department, as well as injecting bags of experience into their squad.

Stockport County signed him back in March 2021 and he went on to make 156 appearances for the North West club in all competitions, firing an impressive 65 goals, 22 of which came in the league campaign as they won the fourth tier title ahead of rivals Wrexham.

Upon confirmation of his exit, the Hatters’ website read: “Paddy leaves with nothing but the best wishes of everyone at Stockport County Football Club after his decisive impact in two title wins since joining us in 2021. The Irishman's place as a Club legend is already assured, having hit 65 goals in 157 County appearances – making him the tenth highest goalscorer in our history.

“As our first captain back in the Football League, his influence and contribution on and off the pitch over the last few years cannot be underestimated, with his 22 goals this season playing a huge part in securing our first EFL title in 57 years.”

New challenge at Chesterfield?

Chesterfield stormed to promotion last term and have had a few months already preparing for the next campaign.

There is no reason why they can’t follow suit to the likes of Wrexham and Stockport County and try and go up again to the third tier.

Madden would be an eye-catching addition and despite him entering the latter years of his career, he still knows where the back of the net is.

Prior to his move to the Hatters, the Irishman played for Carlisle United, Yeovil Town, Scunthorpe United and Fleetwood Town after moving over to England in 2011 from Bohemians.
