Rotherham United are bound to be in the market for a goalkeeper this summer, and Ipswich Town's Christian Walton would be a great option.

Rotherham United's relegation to League One has been confirmed for a few weeks now, so preparations will already be underway to shape up their squad for the new season.

First-choice shot stopper Viktor Johansson has been a standout performer for the Millers this campaign. He is under contract until next summer, though it seems highly likely that he moves on from the club this summer.

Leeds United were linked in Swedish reports last week, while Derby County, Stoke City and Sheffield United are also admirers.

A reported release clause of £900,000 has also been touted as part of Johansson's deal due to relegation, so Rotherham United may have to search for a new number one next term.

Ipswich Town goalkeeper Christian Walton would provide an excellent choice for Steve Evans' side, and the Millers would be smart to target a shrewd deal for the 28-year-old.

Who is this?

A bargain signing

For starters, any possible deal for Walton could prove to be a cheap pick-up with the Tractor Boys’ back-up out of contract this summer.

Despite being an integral part of Kieran McKenna’s side gaining promotion to the second tier during the 2022/23 campaign, he has been forced to take up a spot on the bench this term and a renewal may not be on the cards. Vaclav Hladky starred in his absence earlier this season and held down the no.1 shirt.

The Englishman started all 46 matches during Ipswich Town’s League One promotion campaign, keeping 23 clean sheets in that time to win the Golden Glove award.

Walton has crucial experience in the third tier which could prove key to Evans’ men, who will no doubt be eyeing an instant return to the Championship. He has two promotions on his CV so would also be an excellent figure for the dressing room.

If he is not already on the Rotherham United wish list, then Walton certainly should be.

This season may have been a tough one but with a return to starting football, the shot-stopper can remind everyone just what he’s capable of.
