Aston Villa have had to make some painful sales over the years.

Villa have had to wave goodbye to some top talents over the years from Ashley Young to Christian Benteke.

However, perhaps the most painful sale Villa have made over the years is Jack Grealish.

The England international left Villa in 2021 for £100m, and while it was good money for a top player, it was sad to see Grealish go from his boyhood club.

Speaking on the Ben Heath Podcast, Gabriel Agbonlahor has been discussing Grealish's departure from Villa Park, and he says that he was devastated when the 28-year-old left.

Agbonlahor spoke about Grealish leaving Villa.

"When he left I was devastated and I think he was devastated as well. It's one of those moves where you have to go even though you're Villa through and through, it's guaranteed trophies. He's had a great start to his time there," Agbonlahor said.

Aston Villa are better than ever

While it was painful for Villa to sell Grealish, that sale has proven to be for the best in a lot of ways.

Villa sold Grealish and that allowed the Villans to evolve as a squad and kick on to become the force they are today.

Villa are currently on course to play Champions League football next season, and while a lot has gone into getting Villa to where they are today, Grealish's sale may have been the first domino to fall in terms of helping Villa ascend over the past few years.

Every fan loves to see an academy player come good, and Grealish left behind so many great memories at Villa, but, when £100m offer comes in from a team like Manchester City, there isn't much you can do.
