Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino's decision to not give Ian Maatsen prominence in the first half of the season convinced the left-back to join Borussia Dortmund on loan in the winter market.

The 22-year-old has not only featured regularly for the German club but has also excelled on the pitch. He’s managed two goals and two assists from 19 games and is in contention to make it to the Champions League final with BVB.

Dortmund, who have a 1-0 lead from the first leg, will take on Paris Saint-Germain later today, and ahead of this clash, Algemeen Dagblad discuss the Chelsea owned player.

They also had a chat with the defender's father, Edward Maatsen, who is thrilled that his son joined the German club in January.

Maatsen Sr has revealed that BVB followed the Chelsea man for a while and were well aware of his qualities. That, coupled with another key factor convinced Ian to move to Dortmund.

"What played a role here was that we knew that the club had been following Ian for much longer and they could tell very clearly what his strengths and weaknesses are," he said.

The Dutchman has worked hard to cement a place in Edin Terzić's plans, but his future beyond this season still needs to be clarified.

AD say: 'What Dortmund have done is given the multifunctional Maatsen the confidence, stability and at the same time the freedom to make optimal use of his qualities.'

It's claimed BVB's decision to sign Ian on loan has paid off, so much so that they already want to sign him from Chelsea on a permanent transfer in the next window.
