Tomiyasu set for Arsenal return after Japan crash out of Asian Cup

Takehiro Tomiyasu will return to Arsenal tomorrow after Japan were beaten 2-1 by Iran in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup in Qatar.

Hidemasa Morita’s surging run and finish put the Samurai Blue ahead in the first half but they fell apart after the break.

Mohamed Mohebi equalised on 55 minutes and six minutes into stoppage time Alireza Jahanbakhsh smashed home from the penalty spot after Ko Itakura fouled Hossein Kanani.

Tomiyasu started in the middle of the defence and completed the full match, his fourth appearance in the tournament.

While Japan’s exit will come too soon for the defender to be part of Arsenal’s squad to face Liverpool on Sunday, he should be available for next weekend’s trip to West Ham.
