Sundowns tie down SA's finest Williams

Mamelodi Sundowns have rewarded their first-choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with a new long-term contract.

The current season has seen the 32-year-old establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers based in Africa with his eye-catching displays for Sundowns and South Africa.

Williams played a key role in helping Sundowns clinch the 2023 African Football League title before leading Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish at the 2023 AFCON finals.

The Tshwane giants issued the following statement on Friday – a day after the club clinched the 2023/24 DStv Premiership title.

“Mamelodi Sundowns are delighted to announce that goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has signed a contract extension until 2028,” a club statement read.

Williams has been brilliant between the sticks for Masandawana in the DStv Premiership this season – keeping the most clean sheets (13) in 18 matches.

He is one of the favourites to win the 2023/24 DStv Premiership Footballer of the Season award.
